Attapulgite presents a unique one-dimensional rod-crystal morphology. Its crystals consist of silicon-oxygen tetrahedral sheets and magnesium (aluminum)-oxygen octahedral sheets. Inside the rod crystals, there are regular pore channels. This special microstructure gives attapulgite many excellent properties. The rod crystals interweave and form a fibrous aggregate. At the macroscopic level, it shows good flexibility and plasticity.

Why Is Attapulgite Called the King of Clays?

Attapulgite has earned this nickname for good reason. Its combination of physical and chemical properties is unusual among natural minerals.

High specific surface area. The BET surface area of attapulgite typically ranges from 146 to 210 m²/g, which is higher than most other clay minerals. This large surface area provides plenty of active sites for adsorption.

Strong adsorption capacity. Attapulgite can adsorb both polar molecules (water, ammonia, methanol, ethanol) and non-polar organic molecules, heavy metal ions, and gases. Its adsorption ability follows a clear selectivity sequence: water > alcohols > aldehydes > ketones > normal olefins > neutral lipids > aromatics > cycloalkanes > alkanes. In practical terms, this means attapulgite is particularly effective at capturing the types of contaminants that matter most in industrial and environmental applications.

Colloidal properties. When dispersed in water, attapulgite forms stable colloidal suspensions with good thixotropy and suspension stability. This makes it valuable in coatings and drilling fluids, where it improves rheological performance.

Ion exchange capacity. The cations within attapulgite’s crystal structure can be exchanged with cations in solution. The exchangeable calcium ion content is typically 15–25 mmol/100g, and exchangeable magnesium 5–15 mmol/100g. This feature is useful in soil conditioning and wastewater treatment.

Chemical and thermal stability. Attapulgite shows good stability in most acid-base environments and can withstand elevated temperatures. Its adsorption capacity actually increases after calcination at 200–400°C (due to increased surface area), but decreases above 400°C as the structure begins to collapse.
